This is the list of most important things that I always have:

VLC player - for movies

MSOffice ofc.

utorrent - name says it all

daemon - images, mount

7zip - archives

Firefox ofc.

ImgBurn and CDburnerXP - great burners (both free.. hate nero since v5-6)

CCleaner - removes all kind of junk and temp files

Antivirus.. I really used just Kaspersky (IMO that it`s the best antivirus on the market ^^) but I hate the fact that it`s using a lot of working memory. Even tho I have 2gb RAM I can feel it when it`s scanning..

Atm I`m using Avira.. But Avast can pass too.

Thats my basic stuff..

PostSubject: Re: Format c:   Sat Feb 21, 2009 10:21 am

I'm going to exclude the obvious office/msn and all ...

Browser: Firefox/chrome .. take your pick ... (If firefox then Addon, Downloadhelper it'll get videos off nearly any site, including youtube, and googlevideo)

Codecs:
K-Lite no questions asked a good/complete/updated codec will give you everything you need. from apphit.com

Torrents/Download manager:
BitComet ... i particularly like bitcomet cuz once a week it goes through all your software (without you noticing) and checks if any updates have come for it on apphit.com (it finds updates for EVERY software i use, including drivers)

Media players:
Though i've heard alot about VLC ... by simply updating my K-lite codecs i've NEVER needed anything else ... infact the newer packs even associate your flv files with media player classic (comes bundled) so that you don't need a seperate flv player ...

Compression:
I'm a winrar follower but maybe something else has come out which is better and can handle *.rar files ... but as for my knowledge not yet ..(could be wrong)

ISO's:
Yups Daemon tools is the king ... (insert deep bow here)

and now the most important of them all ... the antivirus:
Avast ... http://www.avast.com/
I've gotten frantic calls from my friends about systems running kaspersky/nod32/norton/mcafee you name it ... and when we ran a bootscan on those systems with avast it unearthed HUNDREDS of viruses on average (peak is kaspersky with 1500 viruses) ... if you read my post on the flash antivirus thing you'll understand when i say my university comp lab is the breeding ground for every possible trojan/virus you can imagine ... so yups .. Avast is the god of all Antiviruses ... + the home edition is free ... and you can register it for free ... so no "cracks" needed ... and its EXTREMELY light on the system too (i operate on high and have no issues with the antivirus slowing things down) on the otherhand norton/mcafee will simply divide your performance by about 2 :P

Music:
Winamp ... but i'm just in love with winamp and have been using it since years now ... i'm sure there are better music managers out there so that kinda really depends on what you are used to ...

Thats all i can remember off the top of my head and seeing the posts before mine ... feel free to ask if you are curious about anything else you might need ... (there is apparently a software for everything) :P

In addtion to what is said already:

- CCleaner. deletes all unneccesary stuff like temp files etc from IE, Firefox etc. It also analyzes how much space on your HD is filled with this cr@p.
- FRAPS maybe?
- and as new tip for Antivir software -> Avira AntiVir. from german developers, but got some friends around the world who use it as well and they are happy with it.
at the end it's your decision :P

My PC is adware free since they are much more easy to detect than viruses; but if I have to use one then I'd use spybot S&D (ie: fixing my friends's PC).

PostSubject: Re: Format c:   Mon Feb 23, 2009 1:26 am

ok... here's what happened:
i reconfigured the primary and secondary units. then i wanted to start the pc but nothing happened... i pressed the power button like crazy but in vain... i looked at the power pins to see if the starter cable is ok and it was. Then suddenly (after ~1 min) the pc started on it's own... i pressed the power button and it stoped. Then i pressed it again to start it and it didn't react (again). After 2 mins it started on it's own... i removed everything beside the CPU and the mems from the main board and tried again. And again, nothing happened... i took a lamp to take a better look on the mainboard but apparently everything was fine (no leaked or puffy condenser). i deconnected and reconnected the power supplky cable to the mainboard but the result was the same. I got mad and phoned everyone i knew to get a new power supply to test if the mainboard or the power supply was the problem. Finaly i got a 235W power supply (it was enought for the mainboard, CPU and mems). When i returned home (you must know that it's freaking cold over here, so the trip was not pleasant) i tested one last time the old power supply. Surprise! It worked. I stoped it and restarted it and it worked again, and again, and again... I wanted to trow the whole thing out of the window!!!!!!! WTF is going on??? My conclusion is that the power supply is defective if it's disconnected from electricity but after a while (connected) it works fine(When i was on my way for the 235 W power supply i left the power on on the pc)...
After that i instaled a Win XP SP3 updated till feb 2009. Instal went ok. afrter that i instaled the mainboard drivers and after the restart i got a blue screen and the the restarts began to flow... Only with the "last known good configuration" option I was able to start windows... apparently this windows version hates my mainboard drivers because after i instaled those again, the whole blue screen resets started again...
In the end i instaled a XP SP2 that i had for over 4 year now... I can say that i had an eventful evening...

P.S. thanks for all the repplies and thanks xs for the apphit.com website. It's great!!!

hehe most welcome ... but i have to thank bitcomet for that since it does the job automatically for me about once a week ...

ok since you've just reinstalled everything ... it won't be too much of a pain to do it again :P

what was the error code on the blue screen ... it might sound like a far flung idea but googleing the error code has always gotten me results ...

Also what you are describing could be a heating issue within the power supply ... if your BIOS setup (the F2/Del setup) allows you to see your board/psu temperatures then it'd be a good idea to go over those ...

but to be on the safest side ... Install xp sp2 ... and update to sp3 from the internet (auto updates) ... its a slightly longer process (depending on your net speeds) but it should work ...

PostSubject: Re: Format c:   Mon Feb 23, 2009 2:22 am

the blue screen was just ~0.5 sec viewable and then the pc restarted automaticaly. i have no idea how to see the error code... No wait, i think i do (with a camera that is set to continuosly shot pictures) but i don't want to instal the stupid windows for the 4th time because now i instaled all the programs... yesterday my 3 year old son wasn't home so i had the whole evening for instaling but today he'll be back and i won't be able (or better said i won't have the nerves to do the reinstal AND to keep him away from the PC) to do that...

Regarding the heating issue, i don't think it's one. The PC doesn't start if the power cable wasn't in the PSU for more than ~20 seconds. Once it started, i have no issue further on, even if i play CD or Atlantica. It seems that it needs to be connected to electricity for ~2-3 minutes before it reacts to the POWER ON command (pressing the power button to start the PC).

i wasn't wondering. I knew that. Mine too... it's more than 4 years old because i didn't bother to use black edition windows and crap like that that instal alot of unwanted software. I like the barebone XP SP2 (or SP3) on which i can instal whatever i want (pirated or freeware).

Most likely, your RAM is bad, or your BIOS corrupted. Take out a few sticks, and use 1 by 1 to find out which one is bad. In the case of corrupted BIOS, get a new MB.

Also, why you nubz still using XP? Use 2003 damm it. It is 10x more stable and more resistant to viruses/adware.
